Bruckner's 8th has not been performed in Berwaldhallen for almost 20 years, it was last performed in 2006 and also then under Honeck's direction.
The Eighth Symphony is monumental (Bruckner's last completed) and manages to be grandiose and almost frightening at the same time. It has also been nicknamed "the apocalyptic". Breathtaking dissonant abysses and a kind of intense stillness coexist in this symphonic drama, a summation of all the composer's previous symphonies.
