P2 The Gold Concert: Bernstein and Ashkenazy
In 1958, the Russian pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy performed for the first time in the United States. He was just 21 years old when he gave a concert with America's hottest classical music name, conductor Leonard Bernstein, who had just taken over as chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic.
At the same concert, Bernstein conducted the still relatively unknown masterpiece Arcana, written in the 1920s by Edgar Varèse - and baroque music by Vivaldi!
Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 2.
Varèse: Arcana.
Vivaldi: Double Concerto, C major, 1st movement.
Schumann: Symphony No. 4.
Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano.
The New York Philharmonic.
Conductor: Leonard Bernstein.
